Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the problems encountered by the research assistants who were carrying out their post graduate study in various state university according to Higher Education Law 2547, article no: 35. In addition, the study aimed to find out the problems of research assistants and suggest possible solutions to these problems. The population of the research is comprised of 1 141 research assistant at the four state universities in the city of Ankara. From the population 300 research assistants whom were appointed by YOK under the article no: 35, in the city of Ankara during 2000-2001 academic year drawn as a research sample. A self-administered questionnaire, which consisted of 54 items, was developed by the researcher and used as a research instrument. The SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) was used to analyse the data gathered by questionnaires. During the analysis of the data, it has been investigated whether or not there were any significant differences between the problems encountered by the research assistants in terms of the variables of the university they were doing their research, higher degree office (Institution), sex, and the programs they have attended were considered. To test the significant differences between the research students' problems in terms of their sex and the programme they have attended t-test was used. Also one-way ANOVA was used to see the differences between the university and Institution they have attended. It has been found that, among the all dimensions 'Higher Council for Education did not make any cooperation with the other state organizations with regard to appointment of the research students wives / husbands' got the highest mean scores (X=.4.19.). There have been no significant differences between the research students' problems in terms of sex and program they have attended. However, it has been found that research assistants in Ankara University have more problems with the university-faculty management, head of department and lectures than those in Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ). In addition, it has been found that research assistant In Gazi University have more problems with Institute management and staff. Also, research assistants who registered with Social Sciences Institutions have more problems with institute management and institute staff than those in Science Institution. Moreover, research assistants who registered with Social Sciences Institutions have more problems with regard to organisation culture than those in Institute of Educational Sciences.
