The aim of this research is to find out the reasons of absenteeism at statesecondary schools and identify the school management policies which can beimplemented in order to overcome this problem.This research was carried out in two dimensions. In the first dimension, aquestionnaire has been implemented to administrators, counselling taechers, branchteachers in Ankara district with scanning model. In the second dimension, necessaryinformation have been gathered from the ?absent students? via interviews.First dimension of the research have been constituted by 263 administrators,230 counselling teachers and 4780 branch teachers who are working at 75secondary schools at Ankara district (Altındağ, Mamak, Çankaya, Keçiören,Yenimahalle, Etimesgut, Gölbaşı ve Sincan). In choosing the sampling ?multi-layeredsampling? method was used. By this method 28 schools were chosen and?Continuous Absenteeism of Students in Secondary Schools & Related SchoolManagement Policies Survey? was implemented by the researcher to 568participants (56 administrator, 61 counselling teacher, 451 branch teacher). Thegathered information was resolved in SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences)programme. In accordance with the career and seniority comparison, One WayANOVA, and in accordance with the gender, t-test have been applied. BivariateCorrelation (Pearson-r) has been maintained in order to see the relation among thereasons of absenteeism.The participants stated aile içi şiddet, bad treatment, incompatibilty, intrafamilybreak ups, low level of education as the reasons concerning the family. Foreducational reasons they stated not directing students to the fields that they areinterested in, not using the appropriate trainig methodology in order to raise theinvolvement of the students, and the lack of communication between the school andparents. As for the reasons derived from the students,the participants stated thefriends encouraging them to leave the schools, students having adolescenceproblems and the existing attractive neighbourhood environment (internetcafes,movie houses,etc.). A significant discrimination couldn?t be found among thosevariables derived from families, education or students in terms of the participants?profession, seniority and sex. The suggestions of the participants about the policiesthat can be applied for reducing the absenteeism are; collaborating with theneighbourhood about prohibiting the students from coffee houses,internet cafes, etc.,paying more attention to the students who are having specific changes in their lives,improving the relationships between the school and parents. A meaningfuldiscrimination couldn?t be found among the result of the variables derived from dutyor seniority. A meaningful discrimination of 0.5 was found in accordance with thegender variable.At the second dimension of the research, information was taken from theabsentee students who were present at the day of the interview and who accepted totalk to us. Interviews were made in 4 randomly selected schools on 35 absenteestudents. Percentage (%) and frequency (f) were used during the analysis of theinformation and, according to the results, the reasons of the absenteeism are; gettingbored in schools, disliking the school and the lessons, provocative friends andstudents having no expectations from schools (education).The most important result of the research is the dissmilar approaches of thestudents and teachers to absenteeism.
