Abstract

Green areas and trees which are the dominant elements of the former have great importance on making the cities atractive for human life. Streets, are the places on which trees seem close and necessary for hu mans, so the street trees are the indispensible elements of the urban spaces. Ankara is the of the leading cities in the area of street planting. However, it is becoming difficult for. the trees to survive ±n the urban spaces. Constructed environment and heavy impacts originated from the human activities cause the trees to. lose their healty conditions. On the other hand, those impacts and new plan tations which were applied without caring the needs are also ineffective and upsetting. As a consequence, trees cannot, reach their actual performances. Within the scope of this study, the problems of the existing trees and the factors which lead to the failure are explained firstly. After that, several solutions are proposed by following the fundamental principles and application possibilities of street planting. A possitive interaction between the ecological system and the human needs can be obtained by street trees in the planning of the urban spaces and the roads which are the primary elements of the former. Because of that, it is required to follow the scientific and techni cal principles of the planning, application and mainte nance to succeed at new street plantations. In order to achieve this goal, landscape architects should be emplo- yen and interdisciplinary coodination shoud be provided at every step of the urban street planning process. Meanwhile, the importance of the protective consciousness of the people and public organizations oriented to the street planting and the necessity of the precautions that have to be taken is also stated in this study.KEYWORDS : Ankara, tree, street tree, planting design, urban ecology, urban desingn, green areas.
