Abstract
Firstly, the meaning of takhrij in different periods is discussed and then it is underlined that takhrij does not mean just locating a hadith in a written source. In conclusion, the most correct definition of takhrij is suggested as: Tahrij means a complete evaluation of a hadith concerning the narrators to whom it is ascribed to and the wording, together with the difference of narrators and wording, studying the hadith within the frame of certain principles and explaining its degree of authenticity, and presenting the hadith in a format to be easily understood by people of our time by finding out all available material to serve this purpose.The most important contribution of takhrij, which can be taken as ?introduction to criticism of hadith? or as a practice of hadith studies, to the field of hadith is being able to make a sound evaluation of the authenticity of the hadiths found separately in different works containing hadith and reveal the connection between these books and the essential sources of the relevant hadith. Also, along with the early takhrij literature, contemporary works of takhrij are referred to.Takhrij is not only a matter of concern in the field of hadith, but it helps the researchers on all branches of Islamic studies. The early scholars of hadith developed the main principles of takhrij under the light of hadith methodology. They strived to establish the way to authenticate the hadiths by their original sources. The studies made without a serious consideration of the principles like hifz (memorization), marifa (knowledge/expertise), fahm (comprehension), and mumarasa (continuous study on the field) will be incomplete. The takhrij studies by some late period scholars are also introduced and discussed from a critical perspective.The ways to reach hadith sources through computer-based methods are also studied, and the place of hadith programs under the light of information technologies and how can they be utilized for takhrij is explained. In addition, the contribution of takhrij to understanding and interpreting hadith correctly with respect to riwaya and diraya is also discussed, the role of takhrij at evaluating a hadith is explained, and finally, the takhrij practices with the aim of supporting madhab-based arguments are also men
