Özet
In this study, it is aimed to reveal the importance, extension and effects of socioeconomic reasons on the school leaving without completing their education in secondary school age and to develop suggestions for eliminating these negative effects. It has been emphasised importance of school dropout issue through stressing importance of education for individual and social development. Extension of the problem has been explained through the enrollment ratios and datas about school dropouts at secondary level. Turkey's situation has been put forward in comparison with the datas from the European Union on this issue and it has been focused on the European Union's assessments and recommendations concerning Turkey. The survey, which was organized to research the socioeconomic reasons of school dropouts, was applied to teachers and administrators of Anatolian High Schools and Vocational High Schools at IBBS-1 level. As a result of factor analysis using datas obtained from the questionnaire, two different scales were developed, namely the Perception Scale for Economic and Social Reasons and the Perception Scale for School Environment, Education System and Health Related Reasons. It was investigated the level of predicting school dropouts of these two main scales and their sub-scales and also the level of relationship between them. According to the results of the research, it was found that school administrators and teachers thought of Economic and Social Reasons are relatively more effective than School Environment, Education System and Health Related Reasons on school dropouts, also in the result of correlation and regression analysis, it has been observed that there are strong relationship between the two scales and that more than half of the School Environment, Education System and Health Related Reasons are caused by Economic and Social Reasons. The Economic and Social Reasons Scale was evaluated as a scale for the measurement of socioeconomic reasons in relation to the concept of socioeconomic status (SED / SES). Thus, the fact that the Economic and Social Reasons Scale is relatively more effective and it explains highly the reasons in the other scale, confirms the thesis of the importance of socioeconomic reasons which explains school dropouts. This result of the research is consistent with the research results in the literature. Since the problem is mainly about socioeconomic reasons, it comes along that policies and programs related to the solution of the problem should also be directed towards reducing the socioeconomic obstacles towards accessing to education. In order to ensure equal opportunities in accessing to education, in addition to support disadvantaged groups in terms of poverty there is a need to develop economic and social policies at macro level to improve the socioeconomic situation of the society as a whole.
