Narsisistik kişilik özelliklerinin anne babadan çocuğa aktarımı: Ebeveynlik tarzlarının rolü
Özet
The aim of the present study is to examine whether grandiose and vulnerable narcissistic personality traits of parents predicted their adolescents' grandiose and vulnerable narcissistic personality traits through parental rearing styles, practices and beliefs. For this purpose, within the scope of preliminary study, the Parent Overvaluation Scale was adapted to Turkish culture in order to assess the parents' level of overvaluation of their children. Within the scope of the main study, analyses were conducted with the data obtained from 398 adolescents between the ages of 14-17 and their parents. Adolescents were administered Narcissistic Personality Scale for Children, Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale, Parental Rearing Behaviours Scale, Psychological Control Scale, Parental Monitoring Scale and Trait Shame and Guilt Scale. Parents were also administered Narcissistic Personality Inventory, Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale, Parental Rearing Behaviours Scale, Parental Overvaluation Scale and Parental Monitoring Scale. The results of the analysis indicated that maternal overvaluation and perceived maternal rejection mediated the relationship between grandiose narcissistic personality traits of the mother and grandiose narcissistic personality traits of the adolescents. The results also showed that paternal overvaluation mediated the relationship between grandiose narcissistic personality traits of the father and grandiose narcissistic personality traits of the adolescents. Moreover, vulnerable narcissistic personality traits of the adolescents are predicted by the vulnerable narcissistic personality traits of the mothers through perceived maternal psychological control and maternal overvaluation, and by the vulnerable narcissistic personality traits of the fathers through perceived paternal rejection and paternal overvaluation. Lastly, in a qualitative study conducted with six adolescent participants with high grandiose narcissistic personality traits, the participants' relations with their parents, their feelings and experiences regarding their parents' attitudes and behaviours were examined. As a result of the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), four super-ordinate themes were emerged: "The relationship with the parents does not meet the expectations", "Role-confusion in the relationship with the mother", "The effort to understand the parent's parenting attitudes: The childhood experiences of the parents", "Perceived academic expectations from the parents". The findings of the study are thought to be a guide in terms of determining the factors that have an impact on the development of narcissistic characteristics and in psychological counselling practices for adolescents.
