Erythrai 1970 Akropolis kazıları seramik buluntuları
Özet
The stylistic characteristics and general chronology of a total of 634 pottery findings dug out during the 1970 Erythrae excavations and preserved at the Akurgal Library at the Faculty of Languages, History and Geography of the university of Ankara have been defined in the course of this master's thesis. These pottery findings, which have been documented for the first time within this master's thesis, provide significant evidence related to the kind of pottery produced during the 7th and 6th centuries BC on the island of Chios and most probably at its neighbouring city Erythrae, both situated within the northwestern part of Ionia. After having been documented with written descriptions, photographs and drawings, which have been later digitized, the pottery evidence has been then catalogued into subgroups respectively by their place of production, their century, their style and finally their shape, with the help of publications which contained similar pieces. As a result, with 608 pieces of Chian pottery, 24 pieces of East Greek pottery outside Chios and 2 pieces belonging to mainland Greece, it was understood that the pottery assemblage was mainly composed of Chian pottery. Besides the evolution of the Chian chalice from 690 to 550 BC, 3 pieces of so-called "Erythraian chalices", which peculiarly possess plastic buds at the level of their handles, were documented within this master's thesis. Moreover, the piece of lid decorated in the Sphinx and Lion style and carrying a rare frieze of galloping horsemen is another important finding resulting from this master's thesis.
