The historians of West Han Dynasty period have reflected the last emperors of their dynasty as exemplars of evil. Reporting to the new governors that the formers have governed the country in a bad manner, they legitimated the current situation. In addition, the historians had also coupled the poor governors with much "worse" women. Holding the emperor's wife responsible for the fall of the dynasty has made sense to the readers who consider the family relationships to be important in politics. The focus of this dissertation is the work titled Lienüzhuan, compiled by Liu Xiang, who has this point of view. Lienüzhuan is a work that encompasses the biographies of women having different positions and virtues during the period between China's Xia Dynasty and Han Dynasty and was written at the end of West Han Dynasty. The main concern of this dissertation is the main characteristics of the woman figure that Liu Xiang reflects based on the biographies of the women in Lienüzhuan, which has an important role in terms of reflecting the period between Xia Dynasty and Han Dynasty in Chinese history. In addition, the dissertation aims to investigate the terminology of Confucius in Ru school of thought within the period in the biographies and explore the point of view regarding women. The fact that Ru school of thought has become the official policy of the Dynasty is both a significant feature of West Han Dynasty and the basis of the discussions of topics in terms of Chinese history such as family, woman and government. This brings to mind the idea that the patriarchal rules of Ru school of thought is active at this period. In order to reflect this, the social roles and statuses of women in the biographies in Lienüzhuan have been investigated. The terminologies that form the basis of Ru school of thought, which in turn make it understandable, were explained and data were gained. In sum, it has been observed that in Lienüzhuan, women who practice at least one of the principles of Confucius were praised whereas the ones who do not practice these principles were criticized for doing disservice to their families, principalities and dynasties.
