In the course of history after AKP's coming to power in 2002, Turkey thinking that it has begun to put the weight on the balance of power in Middle East; is having the desire of producing independent policies. Ankara wants to combine the strength of its rising economy with the Islamic credence that the AKP thinks it has in the region. It wants to be a regional or even a global power in the new order, which it thinks will be established by calculating on the status quo that is expected to be destroyed after the Arab Spring and the power gap that will be created by the withdrawal of the US from the region. For Turkish foreign policy, this desired geopolitical domination will bring a new period in which religious and sectarian differences will be emphasized strongly. In this new period, with the end of the dream of the European Union and with the legitimacy crisis of Turkish Western identity; new directions in terms of foreign policy has begun to be a must. AKP will fill this gap with new Ottomanism reinforced by Islamic motifs. These developments, which made the Middle East the center of foreign policy, rendered the Islamic factor as a necessity at the level of identity. Together with the Arab Spring, this necessity has become an obligation within the framework of the geopolitical notion envisaged by AKP decision makers. In the AKP era, parallel to change of the identity; in terms of balance and structure the institutions of the Republic are exposed to an Islamic impact. The change of institutions has fed the transformation of identity; this has brought about changes in the understanding of national interest. These changes were reflected in foreign policy as the convergence with sectarian blocs in terms of geopolitics, and association with Islamist grassroots organizations in terms of interest groups. Although the effort to use religion as a soft power in foreign policy seems to have positive results before the Arab Spring, it has created problems after the Arab Spring.tr_TR
