Abstract In this study, fossils of Rhinocerotidae from the Late Miocene (MN12) locality of Çorakyerler, Turkey, are examined. Morphological and morphometric analyses are undertaken to determine taxonomic affinities. Three species belonging to three genera are described. These are Ceratotherium neumayri, Chilotherium kowalevskii and Acerorhinus sp.. Two hundered and sixty seven rhino fossil specimens have been recovered from excavation efforts up to this point (2005). Chilotherium kowalevskii is the most common species of rhinoceros with 199 specimens and a minimum number of individuals (MNI) of 23. Ceratotherium neumayri follows it with 66 specimens representing at least seven individuals. Finally, only two specimens of Acerorhinus sp. are present (MNI = 2). The fauna of Çorakyerler suggests open and semiforested paleoenvironments. Large-bodied C. neumayri and intermediately-sized Ch. kowalevskii and Acerorhinus sp. are relatively hypsodont species, further suggesting an open environment for Çorakyeler. Previous paleomagnetic analyses date the Çorakyerler fauna to the MN12 biozone (Kaymakci et al. 2001), confirming biochronological esimates based on faunal analyses and correlation.
