AbstractSupercapacitor is commonly used the term for class of electrochemical energy-storage devices that areideally suited to the rapid storage and release of energy. The specific energy of supercapacitors is severalorders of magnitude higher compared with conventional capacitors. Supercapacitors also have a higherspecific power than most batteries; however their specific energy is somewhat lower. Porous carbonmaterials are the most widely used as the electrode materials due to their high surface area. Activatedcarbons produced from natural materials such as biomasses are the most attractive option to use as theelectrode materials among all carbonaceous materials. An activated carbon electrode with highcapacitance is ideal for applications; this requires the carbon to have not only a high surface area but alsoan optimised pore size distribution and surface chemistry. The aim of this PhD thesis is to prepare the activated carbons with different surface properties as toemploy high performance supercapacitor electrodes from various biomass based (waste tea, tomato andcumin plant) activated carbons. To use such materials, the activated carbons were produced in accordancewith the chemical method. The activated carbon samples were modified by using various techniques aswell as the chemical activation. Effects of electrode preparation method, electrode thickness, the type ofchemical activation agent and the raw material on the capacitive performance of the electrode wereinvestigated. The activated carbon samples prepared by different production/modification methods werecharacterised in terms of surface area and pore size distribution, elemental, SEM, FTIR, XPS analyses.Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Galvanostatic Charge-Discharge (GCD) and Electrochemical ImpedanceSpectroscopy (EIS) techniques were applied to characterise the electrochemical performance of theelectrodes. The results showed that, homogenous electrode surface was obtained by spray coating method comparedwith dip coating. Moreover a sharp increase in the capacitive performance of the electrodes was achieved. The results also showed that the pore structure and type of the activation agent have significant impact onthe supercapacitor performance. Additional activation of the activated carbon in the presence of CO2promoted the performance of the electrodes, leading a change in the pore structure of the sample.Modification of the activated carbons with low concentration of HNO3 leads to improve performance ofthe electrodes. However the high concentration of HNO3 caused a significant increase in the ESR of theelectrodes. While the composite electrodes prepared by Ag nanoparticles and the activated carbon sampleshowed a poor electrochemical performance and reduced the BET surface area, the composite of PANIand the activated carbon presented significant increase in the specific capacitance. Demineralisation ofthe raw material of the activated carbon caused a slight improvement in the performance of the electrodes.
