AbstractThe aim of this study is to determine the linguistic features, frequencies andsequences of rhetorical move and steps with respect to Introduction; Method;Findings, Discussion, Result sections of applied/descriptive master theses in the fieldof Turkish language education. The study has been done by descriptive scanningmodel. The population of the study is 339 applied/descriptive master theses in thefield of Turkish language education which were scanned in the National ThesisCenter of Higher Education Council. Ten percent (f=34) of the theses were evaluatedwith the method of systematic sampling. In the study, primarily, move and steps which can occur in sections wereidentified. In this identification, for Introduction, Swales’s (1990) model whichwidely accepted in the literature was based. However, in this study, master theseswere examining whereas Swales was examing research articles. Because of this, itwas seen that Swales’s model was sufficient for move level, but not sufficient forstep level. For this reason, some steps which proposed by Bunton (2002) added toSwales’s steps. As for Method and Findings, Discussion, Result, there is not a modelthat widely accepted -as Swales model for Introduction- in the literature. For thisreason, by considering the models in the literature, framework rhetorical move andsteps list was constituted. The last form of the occured move and steps list waspresented to 3 faculty members who are experts in the field of textlinguistics. Aftertaking the experts’ opinions, theses were examined according to rhetorical move andsteps’ list. In the study, content analysis was used. Expertisation method was used for raising the research’s persuasiveness. At the end of the study it was obtained that about Introduction, Establishing aterritory and Occupying the niche; about Method, Giving information about researchmodel, Describing population and sample/study group, Describing data-collectionprocedures and Describing data-analysis; about Findings, Discussion, Result, Givinggeneral informations about the study, Stating findings, Commenting on findings andRecommendation as conventional moves. In addition to this, it was seen that aboutIntroduction, Establishing a niche; about Method, Describing data-collection toolsand Indicating the chapter structure; about Findings, Discussion, Result, Indicatingthe chapter structure as optional moves. In the study, because of examing all sectionsof the theses, some move and steps which occured out of section declared could bedetermined. It was obtained that in Introduction; Method; Findings, Discussion, Resultsections linear presentation was not preferred and there wasn’t a dominant sequence. In addition to this, it was seen that there was a tendency at the closing moves. Also,in this sections it was determined that moves occured cyclical and steps which in thesame move occured cyclical.
