Abstract The first step of the study was to determine the minimum effective rates of three sulfonylurea group herbicides (3 % mesosulfuron-methyl + 0.6 % iodosulfuron-methyl sodium, 75 % sulfosulfuron and 25 % tritosulfuron + 50 % dicamba) on common weeds in wheat fields. The efficacy evaluation was made by “Absolute Evaluation Method” instead official Standard Herbicide Evaluation Method based on the observation of the trial plots, which is used for the registration of the herbicides in Turkey. Herbicides were applied at the beginning (Zadoks 20–22) and at the end of tillering stages (Zadoks 30–32). After 14 and 28 days from the treatments weeds were collected from the plots, brought to the laboratory, dried at 70°C for 48 h and weighed. Reduced rates of herbicides applied at the beginning of tillering at Altinova and Polatli Agricultural Farms provided sufficient weed control. Herbicides applied at the end of tillering stages at Konuklar Agricultural farm were sufficiently effective at more reduced rates. ED90 values of the herbicides against the weeds were calculated by using log-logistic model. ED90 values of the mesosulfuron + iodosulfuron against various weeds were lower than the recommended rate and provided herbicide savings of 22–58 % and 21–58 % at the beginning and end of the tillering stages respectively. These values for sulfosulfuron were 22–60 % and 14–56 % at the beginning and end of the tillering stages respectively. For Tritosulfuron + dicamba, 23–65 % and 14–49 % herbicide savings were obtained for the same stages respectively. Selectivity indexes of the herbicides were calculated by using the formula of ED10yield /ED90weed based on log-logistic model for the trials carried out at Altinova and Polatli Agricultural farms. Since the selectivity indexes of the herbicides were above 2, ED90 values can be used to calculate Minimum Effective Herbicide Dose safely. The herbicides used in the experiments did not cause any phytotoxicity at the recommended and double rates.
