Abstract This study was conducted to determine (1) the weight changes of honey bee queens during reproductive development after emergence, (2) the effect of weight at emergence on their matings, onset of ovipositions and their weights at different periods and (3) the effect of weight at emergence on their egg laying activity and some reproductive characters. Honey bee queens were divided into 3 groups based on their weights at emergence: light (<190 mg), moderate (between 190 and 200 mg) and heavy weight (>200 mg). The queens in mating boxes were inspected regularly and weighed at different periods. Differences in intervals between emergence, mating flight and onset of oviposition between queen-weight groups were not found to be statistically significant (P > 0.05). The mean intervals from emergence to first mating flight, from last mating flight to onset of oviposition and from emergence to onset of oviposition were 6.86 days, 3.05 days and 10.60 days, respectively. The weight of queens at emergence affected the weights at 3-days after emergence, the onset of oviposition, three days after onset of oviposition and the age of 1-month (P<0.05). The correlation between the weight at emergence and the weight at 1-month after onset of oviposition (r=0.808) was found to be statistically significant (P<0.01). The differences in dry body weight, spermatheca diameter and volume between queen-weight groups were found to be statistically significant (P<0.05). There were significant correlations between the weight at emergence and the diameter of spermatheca (r = 0.619, P<0.01), the volume of spermatheca (r = 0.607, P<0.01), and dry body weight (r = 0.774, P<0.01). The mean diameter and the volume of spermatheca, the fresh and dry weights of ovaries, and the number of spermatozoa entering the spermatheca were found to be 1.1±0.007 mm, 0.7±0.013 mm3, 53.7±6.00 mg, 9.4±0.99 mg, 4.877±0.0008 million, respectively. There were significant correlations (P<0.01) between the weight at emergence and the diameter of spermatheca (r = 0.619, P<0.01) and the volume of spermatheca (r = 0.607, P<0.01). Discriminant analysis was applied to data from measured live weight and reproductive characters of queens to reallocate them to their pre-assigned weight groups. Discriminant analysis confirmed 3 weight groups with 89.5% correct classification of queens.
