Abstract Spin plays an essential role in almost all branches of the physics and has a special importance in the field of the elementary particle physics. In this thesis the concepts of spin and three dimensional rotations are first introduced in quantum mechanics. Then within the relativistic quantum mechanical formalism the spin and helicity states and their transformations under the Poincaré group are discussed. After a short examination of the irreducible representations of the Poincaré group the physical interpretations of the helicity and spin states for the massless and massive particles are given. Their transformation properties between the center of mass and laboratory frames are examined and the physical meaning of the Thomas precession is discussed. The spin density matrices for the electons and photons are defined and their transformation behaviours are given. A s an concrete example the initial and final particle beam polarizations effects are investigated in detail for one of the the basic processes of particle physics, namely in electron muon scattering.
