AbstractIn 1999 onboard the R/V Bilim of METU, 15 sediment cores were taken from the continentalshelf and upper slope of the Gulf of Antalya to aim the study of controlling factors on typesand distribution of Holocene sediments. The cores reaching 20-184 and sediment thicknesseswere obtained from 20-880 m water depths and were subjected to grain size, carbonate, organic carbon and multielement analysis. The major sediment type is low calcareous (15-38%) and siliciclastic terrigenous mud. Gravel and sand contents in some cores reach up to 98%of bulk sample due to contribution of calcareous biogenic materials from various marineorganisms. Organic carbon contents of sediments vary between <0,1-2,6% but sometimesthese values can increase up to 3,87% with the presence of undecomposed plant remains.Smectite (11-47%), illite (30-54 %), chlorite (9-44 %) and kaolinite (8-29 %) constitute majorclay mineral groups and their distribution do not change significantly down the cores. Theconcentrations of elements such as Al, K, Na, P, Ti and Fe are mostly similar to those ofaverage rocks of earth?s crust and sediments. However, relatively higher contents of Cr, Niand Mg are also found due to the influences from ophiolites. The increases in Zn and Pbconcentrations in the uppermost sediment layers indicate anthropogenic influences.
