Oyuncakların markaları ve kurşun seviyeleri arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmamaktadır (p>0.05), Ancak, oyuncakların renkleri ile oyuncaklardaki kurşun seviyeleri arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulunmuştur (p<0.05).AbstractThe objective of this study was to determine the lead levels in plastic toys by using flame atomic absorption spectrometry and to evaluate whether these inexpensive toys are possible sources of toxic lead for children. Therefore, a totally 50 toys (19 samples made in Turkey as group I and 31 samples imported from China as group II) were purchased from the different places of Ankara in Turkey. Lead is a heavy metal that can affect virtually every organ system in the body, particularly the nervous, hematologic and gastrointestinal systems. It is widely distributed throughout the environment because of contamination from energy production, metallurgy and associated processes. Children are more sensitive to the health problems as a consequence of lead exposure than adults. Studies have shown that lead contamination on the ground of inexpensive toys, much of them imported from China, is widespread. Lead levels of group I and group II were found between 0.10-157.80 ppm and 27.02-384.40 ppm, respectively. The averages were 41.44±46.33 ppm for group I, however 85.35±91.30 ppm was found for group II. Statistically significant differences were found in terms of lead levels among the samples of group I and group II (p< 0.05). No significant associations were detected for lead level in children?s toys regarding their brands (p>0.05), on the other hand statistical significance was found among the paint of toys and lead levels (p<0.05). In this study, the purpose was to demonstrate the potential health risk of lead levels in children's toys.
