AbstractDuring the late Ottoman and early Republican Period, state aimed to spread the modernization project throughout the society via public education. Women teachers were expected to accomplish modernisation project in every part of the society according to the social codes and identities set by the patriarchal authorities. These roles and identities were not only restricted to the schools, but also the women were led to the teaching as a profession to be able to appear in public spheres in popular novels of these periods, in Refet, Udi, Çalıkuşu ve Tatarcık. Thus, the identities of women teachers, their clothes, behaviours and knowledge were determined by the patriarchal political authorities both in the novels and at the schools. But the thoughts, the experiences, the financial and the emotional problems of teachers were overlooked. Although women were accepted in public spheres by the state in both of these periods, women’s conditions were always the starting point for the reforms made in society. This fact obviously proved that these changes were made and maintained under the domain of patriarchal authorities.
