Yazar, 1800’lerde yaşamış insanların fakirliğini ve Madrid’in sokaklarını kalemiyle adeta resmeder.AbstractIn XIXth century, Spain was having hard time because of the loss of their South American colonies and the Independence War, which led the country to an economic crisis. Moreover, the war between Carlists and liberals wore off the country politically and socially. At a time like this emerged Realism to wake people from their dreams and show them the truth no matter how much it hurts. Benito Pérez Galdós was one of the most outstanding Spanish writers of Realism. Producer of many novels and theatral pieces, he also wrote Episodios Nacionales, the great historical work that illuminates the past of Spain. He died in 1920, becoming a great figure in European and Spanish literature. With his novel Doña Perfecta, Galdós shows the readers one of the biggest problems of the XIXth century Spain, the war between liberals and traditionalists. In the novel, an aunt orders his nephew’s death in order to protect the faith and beliefs of her community. Built with rich descriptions of people and places, the novel points out the blind faith of rural area of Spain, which rejects any renovations. Another thing that the writer stresses out is that nothing is what it seems.Misericordia is about an old woman who begs on the streets in order to maintain her mistress and her broken family. Her mistress, after being inherited a large amount of money, completely forgets about the good deeds Benina has done for her and doesn’t accept her since she chooses to help the blind Morrocan. The writer paints the streets of Madrid with his pen, and the poverty of people that lived in 1800s.
