AbstractOur study examines the problems that black people encountered throughout the history in Aimé Césaire's four plays Et les chiens se taisaient (1958), La Tragédie du Roi Christophe (1963) , Une saison au Congo (1966) and Une tempête (1969). This study has three main topics: Chapter 1: Slavery , Chapter 2: Rebellion , Chapter 3: Freedom. In Chapter 1, in Aimé Césaire's three plays Une tempête, La Tragédie du Roi Christophe, Et les chiens se taisaient, the history of slaves from Africa to the New World, the exile of blacks and their situation as a slave in the New World are discussed. In Une tempête, Caliban appears as a black slave and Prospero is the white man who enslaves Caliban. In Et les chiens se taisaient, a hero called "Le Rebelle" fights for his people and criticizes the history of slavery. In La Tragédie du Roi Christophe, King Henri Christophe sets free Haitians from slavery. In Chapter 2, the before mentioned plays and in addition to these, the play Une saison au Congo examine the theme of rebellion. In three plays Une tempête, La Tragédie du Roi Christophe and et les chiens se taisaient, slave rebellions started by black people, who no longer accept slavery, against their masters are discussed. Une saison au Congo tells of the struggle of Congolese against colonists. In Chapter 3, the above mentioned four plays examine the theme of freedom. In La Tragédie du Roi Christophe King Henri Christophe's continuous support for black freedom movement; in Une saison au Congo rebellion of Congolese and consequently decolonization of Belgian Congo; and in Une tempête the freedom that Caliban gained as an individual is depicted, while in Et les chiens se taisaient the tragic end of a hero who liberates his people is mentioned. In these four plays of Aimé Césaire, we have seen that the act of liberation of the black people after rebellion has a great importance. The aim of the Césaire writing these plays is to show that there is no race and color discrimination, and all people have equal rights.
