Age of menopause varies generally between the ages of 45-55. Menopause started before the age 40 is considered early menopause, and after the age 55 is called late menopause. Variables that may affect the age at menopause have been the matter of curiosity and many researches have been carried out on this issue. In this study, women had early menopause and women entered menopause at the normal age limit were compared in terms of stress, sex roles and marital adjustment variables. The research sample consisted of a total of 224 participants. 82 of them underwent early menopause (below 40 years old) and 142 women who underwent menopause within the normal age limit (above 40 years old). Demographic Information Form, Stress Symptoms Scale, The Ways of Coping Checklist (WCCL), Marital Adjustment Scale and the Bem Sex Role Inventory were applied to the participants. T-test result, the comparison of early menopause and normal menopause groups regarding the variables, revealed that the women who went through menopause early were overstressed, less likely to use manner so as to overcome stress with self-confidence and optimistic approach, got the lower scores of marital adjustment than the women who underwent menopause at normal age limit. In this study, the correlation analyses were done for both groups independently. The women group of early menopause showed the positive correlation between education level and spouse corroboration, social support, whereas the negative correlation between education level and submissive behavior. In addition, marital satisfaction increased with spouse support and it followed by reduction in signs of stress. In the basis of the study's purpose, regression analysis were performed separately for both groups in order to see whether the variables which predict the signs of stress observed in women who enter the menopause both early and timely, differed or not. As a result, education level, employment status, numbers of children and spouses support to each other of demographic variables were observed as predictors in neither early menopause nor normally menopause groups. However, the common variables were "degree of agreement in marriage", "the feel of despair approach" and "asking for social support" that were signs of stress have been identified as predictive covariates in both groups. Furthermore, the "masculine sex role" emerged as the predictor variables in only the early menopause group. Keywords: Menopause, early menopause, stress, marital adjustment, sex roles.
