AbstractIn this thesis, the prominent subjects of mother-daughter dyad and the creation of the daughter?s identity via the transfer of the mother?s story to the daughter will be explored in the novels The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God?s Wife and The Bonesetter?s Daughter by the Chinese-American author Amy Tan.The plots of these three novels, which have autobiographical traces, develop along a similar track: A mother who is unknown and who is kept outside; the struggle of the daughter to reach the mother/the struggle of the mother to reach the daughter for some reason and, ultimately the process of uniting with the mother. All the mother figures in the novels have experienced big catastrophes in China and they all withhold their life stories from their daughters and families. Another similar point in the novels is the existence of a woman?s sorority together with which the mother can stand up to calamities.Tan makes the mothers in the novels tell the secret stories of themselves in order to complete the deficient identities of their daughters or in order not to be forgotten. The aim of this study is to analyze, in the light of previous studies on the subject, the significance of Tan?s work, and the extent and nature of her contribution to the field of ?women?s writing?.
