Hemen hemen her öğretmen uygulamalarda kullanılacakmateryallerin temin edilmesinin önemini, serbest etkinlikler programınınokulun fiziksel şartları göz önüne alınarak yeniden yapılandırılmasıgerektiğini vurgulamıştır. AbstractThis study aims to investigate how the implementation of ‘Free TimeActivities’ is currently practiced and its feasibility. ‘Free Time Activities’ wasput into practice in the 2010-2011 academic year but then was decided to beabolished gradually in the 2012-2013 academic year. In order to reach thegoal of the study, what is being done in grade 1-4 in primary schools as partof “Free Time Activities” were determined and the rationales for practice thatwere specified by the Ministry of Education and these practices werecompared. In this study, which was designed as a case study, two primary schools, which differ in terms of physical conditions, class size and the socioeconomicstatus, were chosen. “Teacher Interview Form,”“Student Focus Group Interview Form” and “Observation Form” developed bythe researcher were used as data collection tools. In order to collect data, interviews with one classroom teacher from each level, observations ingrades 1-4 and focus group interviews with a group of students from theobserved classes were conducted. Data obtained from the two schools wereevaluated separately and then similarities and differences in practice werediscussed.According to the results, the two schools have different features but theresults appeared to be similar in terms of the practice in question. Therationales of the Ministry of Education for Free Time Activities and the practices in schools were revealed to be different. In the implementation ofFree Time Activities, it was found out that the variety is low and that the classteachers often preferred in-class reading, oration and writing activities. Thefact that students have no choice over the activities, and that mostlymonotype activities were utilized are not in line with the rationales for puttingFree Time Activities into practice. The opinion teachers and students of different grades was common thatthe practice of Free Time Activities should be improved. Almost all of theteachers highlighted the importance of getting access to the materials to beused and that the implementation should be redesigned taking the physicalconditions of the schools into account. During the observations, it was seenthat Free Time Activities are often expended when the schedule of axissubjects fall behind and the teachers supported this view.As for the opinions of the students, one noteworthy finding was thatthey were dissatisfied with the usage of Free Time Activities ascomplementary for the axis subjects. Another finding was that there was nocrystal clear understanding of Free Time Activities. It was believed that thiswas because of the way it was being implemented. It was concluded that both teachers and students share the opinion thatThe Practice of Free Time Activities should be redesigned taking physicalconditions of the schools into account. What the students believe is that thepractice should continue and what the teachers believe is that the practiceshould continue having been redesigned.
