AbstractPulp and paper manufacturing processes use large amounts of natural resources in line with a high rate of waste left to the environment. 60 m3 of water is used for producing per tonne of paper and nearly 10-50 m3of waste water is released after processing. As a result of producing of waste water that is discharged into the environment can damage the soil and the living creatures because of including the high rate of pollutants. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), toxicity and colour are the parameters for evaluating the waste water characterization. Coagulation is a chemical treatment process which is mostly used for treatment of Paper industry waste water. In paper industry the cogulants used for Coagulation process are ferric chloride, ferric sulphate, polyaluminium chloride, aluminium chloride and aluminium sulphate. In this study ferric chloride, ferric sulphate, aluminium chloride and aluminium sulphate have been used for experimental studies. The optimum coagulant concentration and pH have been determined by experiments and analysis. The results of these experiments and analysis have been used in an optimization study in Design Expert software. After that the optimum concentrations and pH values are 1200 mg/L – 8.0, 1000 mg/L – 9.0, 1200 mg/L – 6.8 and 1200 mg/L – 6.0 for given coagulants in order. The second stage of this study is on-line pH control. The control mechanism is managed by Adaptive Heuristic Control (AHC) algorithm. The optimum pH values are given to the programme as the set points, then the system pH controlling studies has been carried out. After the control experiments waste water samples have been taken from the reactor. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) analysis has been done with these samples for researching the effect of the coagulation processes. The untreated waste water sample COD value is 978.66 mg/L. The treated samples COD values are with FeCl3 180 mg/L, with FeSO4 142 mg/L, with AlCl3 127 mg/L and with Al2(SO4)3 110 mg/L.
