This study examines the etatism practices, mainly from the economic perspective, during the above mentioned period, and explains the underlying factors, outcomes, and effects on the subsequent period. The author primarily analyses the post-war economic situation and questions the events that lead to etatism as a remedy to the economic problems of the country. The Great Depression?s effects on Turkey and on the choice of economic policies constitute another essential part of our study.Etatism has been a disputable concept in Turkey. Our research showed that the use of etatism as an economic policy between 1929 and 1939 was not ideological or a pre-planned system but it was a pragmatic solution. The goals of industrialization, rapid development and economic independence aimed at the first years of Turkish Republic, could not be achieved till 1930s. Turkish nation, exhausted by the war, got more and more discontent due to bad economic condition. It was understood that the liberal economic policy applied between 1923 and 1929 was not sufficient to catch up with the developed countries and that insisting on using liberal policies would weaken the regime. A radical shift in economic policy approach became indispensable and etatism was seen as a way out in such a situation. However, etatism was not applied systematically and uniformly; and applications varied according to the needs of different industries. Therefore, we conclude that etatism was not used with an ideological but used with a pragmatic approach to answer the needs of the day in Turkey between 1929 and 1939.trPragmatikDevletçilikTürkiye'de devletçilik uygulamaları (1929-1939)Etatism practices in Turkey (1929-1939)masterThesis
