The introduction gives information on the method and major concepts of the study.The first chapter, titled ?Manifestations of the Rationalistic Trend in the Period Before Ab? Han?fah?, provides a general discussion of the manifestations of rationalistic outlook in political, doctrinal, and social spheres in the Muslim community of the first century of Islam. In addition, it investigates major rationalist figures of the century with a special focus on the rationalistic outlook of the Maw?l? personages of the period. The second chapter, titled ?Ab? Han?fah?s System of Thought and Rationalism?, elaborates on the doctrinal views of Ab? Han?fah and the Ash?b al-Ra?y, discussing his relationship with the Murjiah. It also addresses Ab? Han?fah?s rationalist attitude to the Islamic legal thought. The third chapther, titled ?Ash?b al-Ra?y in Islamic Intellectual Tradition?, deals with the polarization of Ash?b al-Ra?y (Rationalists) and Ash?b al-Had?th (Traditionists) on the question of the nature of faith with a special emphasis upon Ab? Han?fah?s contribution to this process. This chapther also deals with Ab?
