<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="ozet" lang="tr_TR">20th century is a period in which many religious-political movements in Islam are experienced. The movements, which were realized within the body of Islam and which were greatly affected by the Salafist way of thinking, took effect in every corner of the world by virtue of the developing technology. As a result of this spreading process Salafism, by taking into consideration the political interests, has been identified with many other concepts such as Islamic fundamentalism, Islamism and Wahhabism in the West. Salafis of the United States are also referred to themselves as Islamic fundamentalist, Ahl al-Âsâr, Ahl- al-Hadith and Wahhabîs in addition to Salafî. Salafism has been used as soft power by Saudi Arabia as of the second quarter of the 20th centruy, placed in the United States among African-Americans at first stage through both support of Saudi Arabia and developing technology. Salafism, which come into the existence in the United States along with African-American population, firstly found approval from the African-American population in the American prisons, then it recieved individuals from different races and with higher education. In the United States, the Salafist discourse is shaped in the monopoly of the Wahhabî 'ulamâ. For this reason, there exists an extreme respect and reverence towards Ibn Taymiyyah and Muhammad b. 'Abdulwahhâb. The fact that the Salafis accepted themselves as the salvated party, led them to develop a discretionary, defensive and critical discourse against other sects and communities other than Salafism.</dim:field>
