Our study was conducted to determine the level of smartphone addiction between 1st and 6th grade students of Ankara University School of Medicine. Data on socio-demographic characteristics of smartphone users and other addictions of individuals with high level of smartphone addiction were also collected from research group. Material and Methods: 414 students studying at the 1st and 6th semesters in Ankara University of School Medicine were enrolled in the study in the academic year of 2016-2017. A questionnaire on Socio-demographic characteristics and " Problematic Mobile Phone Use Scale" were used to collect data for smart phone addiction level. The data obtained in our study were analyzed using the SPSS 11.5 package program. p<0,05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: The average level of addiction of students according to the whole scale was 39,7512 ± 11,76 points. Of the 414 students 63.8% were female (n = 264), 36.2% (n = 150) were male. According to our study, the addiction levels of 1st graders were above the average in a statictically signficant manner when compared with 6th graders (p<0,001). As the socioeconomic level increased, the level of addiction increased statistically significantly (p <0.001). The addiction levels increased statistically significantly (p <0.001) as the time participants spent on mobile phones increased. There was no statistically significant correlation between smoking and alcohol use and smartphone addiction (p = 0.093, p = 0.464). Conclusion: The young people who make up the future spending their most of the time with smart phones, deterioration of friendships, and overuse of smartphones instead of socializing negatively affect mental health. It is very important for the family physicians, who are the first encounter centers of the patients, to have enough knowledge about this disorder, to recognize this disorder and to show appropriate treatment approaches.
