AbstractThe purpose of this study is adsorption of phenolic pollutant in water on commercial activated carbon and biomass-based activated carbon and regeneration of saturated activated carbons with microwave energy that it has common use field in recent years. In this study, the first step is demineralisation of the waste tea collected from a tea factory. The second step is to prepare the activated carbons with microwave activation method and to use of phosphoric acid with original and demineralised waste tea. The phenolic components, which are important pollutants in water, were allowed to adsorb on the activated carbon (commercial and prepared activated carbons). Finally, the regeneration of phenols adsorbed on the active carbons was achieved via solid phase microwave reactor (SPMR) and household microwave oven respectively. Consequently, the changes in the performance of the initial activated carbon were determined at the end of adsorption-regeneration experiments. The initial surface areas of activated carbons used in the adsorption-regeneration experiments are 1036 and 1152 m2/g commercial activated carbon and prepared activated carbon from the waste tea, respectively. The activated carbon from the demineralised waste tea with HCl is 1235 m2/g. The adsorption-regeneration cycles of the activated carbon (commercial and produced ones) were realized and it was determined that the activated carbons may be used up to five consecutive regenerations. The first step of regeneration, the surface areas of regenerated activated carbons have increased compared to the initial surface area, but following the steps of regenerations the surface area gradually decreased. In comparing with the regeneration system, the household microwave gave pore size distribution values (according to Non-Local Density Functional Theory) showed that regeneration the microwave improved the mesopore fraction of the solids. As conclusions, the activated carbon prepared from the biomasses may be reused by regeneration with microwave in removing phenol and para-nitrophenol (PNP) in water. Regeneration of the activated carbons with microwave reduces the cost due to saving energy and time.</dim:field>
