Abstract

In this study, three different modified surfaces are fabricated by using diazonium salts reduction method at the glassy carbon electrode. These surfaces are nitroazobenzene?glassy carbon (GC-(NAB)n), nitrophenyl?glassy carbon (GC-(NF)n) and azobenzene?glassy carbon (GC-(AB)n). In addition, two more surfaces are also prepared by the electrochemical reduction of nitro (-NO2) bearing surfaces to amine (-NH2) groups. (GC-(NAB)n) and (GC-(NF)n) surfaces are reduced to aminoazobenzene? glassy carbon (GC-(AAB)n) and aminophenyl?glassy carbon (GC-(AF)n) surfaces, respectively. The modified electrodes are characterised electrochemically by using cyclic voltametry. Spectroscopic characterization of the surfaces are performed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and attenuated total reflection fourier transform IR spectroscopy. The effect of number of CV cycles during modificaton and the effect of sonication time after the modification, to the thickness of the formed surfaces are fallowed by elipsometric method. It is observed that the sonication prosess helps the surfaces become more homogeneous acting as an annealing process. The thicknesses of the four prepared surfaces, namely GC-(NAB)n, GC-(AAB)n, GC-(NF)n and GC-(AF)n increased with the increasing number of CV cycles until a certain cycle number, but sonication time did not have any significant effect on film thicknesses. The film thickness of the GC-(AB)n surface increased with the increasing number of CV cycles, but until a relatively smaller CV cycle number. Also the thickness of GC-(AB)n surface decreased with sonication time showing a complete different behaviour with respect to the other surfaces.
