Abstract

Goals: Angiogenesis is essential for tumor growth and metastasis. Vascular endothelialgrowth factor (VEGF) is involved in increased angiogenic activity and disease progression insolid tumors. The effect of VEGF expression with testis tumors on the clinical stage andsurvival is contradictory in recent studies. We evaluated the relationship between VEGF andthe clinicopathologic findings of the testicular germ cell tumors in this study.Patients and Methods: In this study, 26 patients between 2002 and 2004 who treated byradical orchiectomy due to testis tumor were included. Serum VEGF levels before theprocedure and the VEGF expression on the orchiectomy specimens were recordedimmunhistochemically. All immunhistochemical results were scored due to positive cellpercentage and the severity of immun stainig. These scores are ranged from 0 to 12.Results: nine of the patients were seminomas while 17 were non-seminomatous germ celltesticular tumors (NSGCT). Seventeen patients were clinically stage I, 1 was stage IIa, 3 weresatge IIb, 2 were stage IIc and 3 were stage III. No statistically difference was found betweenthe serum and the tissue VEGF expression with clinical stages (p=0.811, p=0.559). when thepatients were diveded into two groups as clinical stage I and higher satges, no corelation wasfound between these two parameters (p=0.525, p=0.751). only in patients with pureEmbryonal carcinoma (EC) or mix tumors including EC, statistical difference was foundbetween tissue VEGF scores (p=0.009).Conclusion: No correlation was found between serum VEGF levels and the tissue VEGFscores with the clinical stages. The higher tissue VEGF scores in the NSGCT patients withEC component reflects the high clinical stages. Tissue VEGF score levels can be used as aprognostic risk factor as EC in the patients with clinical stage I NSGCT tumors
