Abstract

It is impossible to consider the political history and civil-military relation in Turkey without Süleyman Demirel. His attitude towards military interventions is one of the most argued and complicated issue about Demirel. He reacted differently to military interventions and great difference existed especially in the 28 February era. It is impossible to consider the topic without restricting the several effects behind the attitudes of Demirel towards military interventions. Ideologies can basically explain ?the issue of Demirel - military interventions?. The ideologies or ideological elements of central right related to military interventions can be categorized into five: democracy, religious conservatism and secularism, political statism, nationalism and Kemalism (Atatürkçülük). These political elements had different influences on approaches of Demirel to military interventions changing from opposition to alliance. In other words, the different attitudes of Demirel towards military interventions stem from ideologies of central right that cause contradictory results in the relation. As a result of this, a serious continuation existed after 27 May, 12 March and 12 September, while a partial rapture in the 28 February in the reaction of Demirel to military interventions. In conclusion, the different attitudes of Demirel toward military interventions are the differences of ideologies, central right and so the Turkish political structure.
