Abstract

The tradition of Byzantine military texts considered as continuation of the Greek war narrative which goes back to IVth century B.C. Along with the political, technological, religious, economic and geographical changes Byzantine military texts have built up as a unique narrative. Byzantine military texts shed light not only to the organisationof the Byzantine army but also to the changes that occured in the army. Also it is possible to obtain information on tactis and strategy of Byzantine Empire from those sources. In addition to that we are able to learn the other states' tactics from Byzantine military texts. This dissertation includes the translation of two anonymous Byzantine military texts to Turkish. One of these sources is known as De Velitatone and the other is known as De Re Militari. In addition to the translation of these sources the dissertation also contains the Byzantine Army in X. century, the legal regulations took place under the Macedonian Dynasty, the "stratiotika ktimata" and the socio-cultural value of the anonymous texts, tactics and strategy of the X. century Byzantine empire.
