Abstract

SUMMARY The town Ilgaz has been settled on the west-side of the Black-Sea Region. The town belongs to Çankırı city. Its climate and natural vegetation show transitive properties. The distance from Ilgaz to Ankara is 180 km and 60 km to Çankırı. The population of the town Ilgaz, has slightly increased from 1935 until 1990 (4%). Although the population of the country-side increased until 1960, it has continually decreased after this year. But the urban population has four folds increased from 1935 until present. There is an emigration movement in Ilgaz. This emigration has occured especially from the country-side. The first reason of it is economical and the second one is educational. The past of the settlement of Ilgaz, dates to ancient times. Many traces which belong to the times of Hittite, Frigue, Rome, and Byzance have been found here. This area has been known as "Paphlagania" in the history. It has been claimed that, there might be "Kimiata" antique city on the land where Ilgaz was settled. The North -Anatolia whose work-field is tectonically active, is on the Northern Anatolian Fault-Line. This zone has been formed from palaeozoic land and cover stratums on it which belong to the Mesozoic and Neozoic periods. On the valley of the river Devrez, there are also old and new alluvion belonging to Quaternary. In Ilgaz the average temperature is 10,1 C°, and the fall is 473 mms. Rain falls in spring most, and winter, summer and autumn follow this. The rate of the agricultural land in Ilgaz is 14% of the whole land. Agricultural activities may be categorized as cereals, leguminous plants, industry and feed plants. The muchness of the pastural land naturally has caused in the economical activities. The forested area is 38,7 % of the whole land. Although the town Ilgaz has rich touristic values, these values have not been evaluated. Some of these values are Ilgaz Mountain National Park, and skiing foundation in this park, natural beauties, resort areas and tumulusses.
