Abstract

In this study, marriage programs, which were accepted as a product of popular culture, broadcasting on television were analyzed through one-week records of ?Esra Erol?da Evlen Benimle? on ATV and ?Su Gibi? on Fox TV by Van Dijk ideological and critical discourse analysis. Marriage programs were examined by the concepts of popular culture, media, television and gender in thisstudy. As a result of the analysis, it found that in discourse of ideal partner on these marriage programs, the viewpoint that shapes with the traditional, social andmoral rules and is accordance with Turkish culture and Turkish family structure came into prominence.Actors who are positioned in terms of patriarchal order in marriage programs were defined by their genders. In the process the struggle between the dominant/settled and opponent/critical meanings and the stated qualifications while creating the ideal partner discourse in marriage programs which were interpreted as popular culture product, gender roles, values attributed to men and women in Turkish society and social values were re-produced by an implicit way.Key words: Popular Culture, Media, Television, Gender
