Yetiştirme yurtlarında kalan gençlerin kendi kaderlerini tayin hakkı ile öz-saygı düzeylerinin değerlendirilmesi

This research was planned and conducted with a view to establishing the right of self-determination and the levels of self-esteem of youth aged between 13-18 dwelling in the state orphanages. Of 360 forms handed out to those inhabited in the orphanages of (defunct) Institution of Social Services and Child Protection in Edirne, İstanbul, Kırşehir, Kocaeli and Sakarya; 260 forms were returned to the researchers and 187 out of filled forms were taken into consideration for the research. In the course of the research, answers given to Likert-type sentences were scored; ?Varimax Analysis Technique?, which is a technique of factor analysis, was employed in order to check structural validity of relevant mean; the sentences whose factor leading are below 0,45 were not included in calculations. In this research, AIR Self-Determination Scale Student Form was adapted in Turkish; the number of ?Cronbach Alpha? was calculated 0,910 and accordingly this Scale seemed to be applicable in Turkey. It can be said this research produced valid and reliable result since the number of Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was calculated 0,625.In this research, t-test was employed to understand whether the right of self-determination and the levels of self-esteem of youth can vary in terms of age and gender. Correlation between the factors of criterion of self-determination and correlation between criterions of self-determination and self-esteem were established by the employment of Pearson Correlation parameter.It was found out that average age of the youth subjected to the research was 14,6; remarkable majority of them went on to attend high schools; their biological parents were alive.It was established that girls had more optimistic perceptions about what they did and felt and their lives in schools and the orphanages than boys had, as well as they were more determined than boys with regard to reaching their own goals; the levels of self- esteem of the youth aged 15-17 were lower than those of the youth aged 12-14, specifically inclinations of regarding themselves as unsuccessful amongst the youth aged 15-17 were higher than those of the youth aged 12-14.It was understood that total portion of capacities of self-determination of the youth dwelling in the orphanages was 76,8%; total portion of opportunities of self-determination was 72,43%. Based on those figures, total level of self-determination of the youth was calculated 74,51% and this figure was considered high. On the other hand, the level of self-esteem of the participants was found at high-level ( =35,31).
