AbstractThe thesis research implemented in the subject of the Turkish influence on the Polish Baroque literature is limited to the first close contact (1620-1621) of the intensive battles that were encountered between the two neighboring countries in the 17th century which is named as the Baroque period in the history of literature. To measure the echoes and responses of this historical event in the Polish Baroque literature, two epic poetic sagas, representing the school of the nobles who ruled the Polish literature of the period, were selected. Therein, the issue of the first Ottoman–Polish war that was handled in a comprehensive manner has been discussed in the following manner: The period of war has mostly been examined in Waclaw Potocki's work "Battle of Khotyn", while the approval of the post-war peace treaty was examined in the basis of the work entitled "Brave Embassy” – which is qualified as a historical documentary to a great extent - of Samuel Twardowski who had personally participated in the negotiations. The historical personalities of the period that formed the frame of incidents taking place in the works, the structure and functioning of the Ottoman Empire and the Ottomans‟ characteristic features and habits were subject to analysis as well. The general negative attitude that takes place in the European Baroque literature against Ottomans which is in the enemy position exists within the analyzed works. In both works, when the “Ottomans” were portrayed historical facts were often distorted and many clichés known in Europe of that period were used. Deformations resulting from not mentioning the incidents or from exaggerated mentioning of the events are very intensive specially in portraying military 104 interventions. The parties‟ military force and their attitude in the battle field, manipulation of data such as those killed in the war demonstrate the bias in the narration in order to discredit the Ottomans. To create a unilateral negative impression in the matter of Ottoman Empire‟s history and functioning, the information often is wrong and generally remains superficial. Among the typical clichés used in the works, arrogance, cruelty, greed and the ungovernable lust can be shown as examples of Ottomans‟ characteristic features. Notwithstanding, in the depiction of the historical characters, unlike the scheme of Ottomans (evil) – Europeans (good) that was dominant in the history of European literature, a more neutral approach is exhibited in the portraits of Suleiman the Magnificent, Dilaver Pasha and Halil Pasha, in particular. Apart from this, historical data about the first Otoman – Polish war and the Ottoman Empire and historical personalities from upper classes of the reign of the Sultan Osman II. is important in terms of the Turkish (Ottoman) history.
