AbstractThe purpose of the research was to compare the estimations of item parameters and abilityparameters based on unidimensional and multidimensional item response theory under theseconditions: different sample sizes of multidimensional structures (500, 1000 and 2000),correlation between dimensions (0.10, 0.40 and 0.70) and the number of dimensions (two, three and five). The parameter values which were estimated according to the two modelswere evaluated with item correlation coefficients, and the standard errors of the parametervalues were evaluated with Root Mean Squared (RMS), according to the model with lowererror outcomes. Goodness of fit statistics; -2loglikelihood, Akaike Information Criterion(AIC) and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) were employed to explore the fit of theestimations based on the two theories in the model. In addition, variance analysis was usedto determine whether the standard error of the mean obtained from the individual responseparameters in all conditions varied.MIRTGEN software was utilized for data simulation. Two, three and five dimensionalsimple structured data that were fitted to the three complementary categorical (1-0) modelwere obtained through simulation. The number of items for data simulation was fixed to 30.For parameter a, in data set production, a (item discrimination) values in all the dimensionswere produced in the lognormal distribution with the mean of 0.00 and standard deviation of1.00 and b (item difficulty) values in the range of -1.75 minimum to +1.75 maximum. Thevalues of the guessing parameters were fixed to c=0.15. Standard normal distribution wasperformed for ability parameters. The data were applied 25 times for production bychanging the number of dimensions in data construct, correlation between dimensions andsample size. Thus, 3x3x3=27 different research conditions and 27x25=675 data set wereobtained. flexMIRT program was employed as well as apt methods for each data set in data analysis: BA-EM algorithms two and three dimensional data constructs and MH-RMalgorithms for five dimensional data construct. The study concluded that the item parameter estimations were highly correlated for bothmodels, as a result of the analyses of two, three and five dimensional data constructs whichwere performed based on unidimensional and multidimensional item response theory. Whenthe standard RMS values obtained from the estimations of item parameter values in two, three and five dimensional data constructs were compared, it was seen that multidimensionalitem response theory (IRT) estimated with a lower number of errors in comparison tounidimensional IRT. It was observed that the values of ability parameter which wereestimated in two, three and five dimensional data constructs were highly correlated in allresearch conditions. Besides, it was found that multidimensional item response theoryestimated with a lower number of errors in all conditions, when the standard errors obtainedfrom the ability parameter estimations were considered. As a result of the analyses based onunidimensional and multidimensional IRTs, model-data fit values were examined andmultidimensional models gave higher fit in the model. As a result of variance analysis, based on the standard error of the mean obtained from the ability parameters, it wasconcluded that different data constructs influenced the reached standard errors and highcorrelations between dimensions produced low error outcomes. As a result, it was concluded that multidimensional IRT gave better outcomes in analysis ofmultidimensional constructs, and produced more accurate results, particularly in estimationsof individual response parameters and decision making, when compared to unidimensionalIRT. It was also found that unidimensional IRT estimated better ability parameter valueswhen the number of dimensions is low and the sample size is large, and that the number of dimensions higher than two and the sample size larger than 1000 in multidimensionalmodels influenced estimations positively. It was concluded that higher correlations betweendimensions improved estimations based on both theories in analyses with unidimensionaland multidimensional IRTs but there were estimations with low error outcomes inmultidimensions.
